A charming mid-century Clover musical powder compact from Japan, combining a traditional vanity compact with a tiny mechanical music box.

The rectangular gold-tone case is decorated across the lid with an intricate Japanese architectural landscape rendered directly into the metal, accented in gold, silver, green and soft blue. Inside is a mirror along with separate compartments for the musical mechanism and loose face powder.

Remarkably, the original Clover powder puff and removable powder sifter remain intact and in very good condition.

Wind the mechanism and the compact plays the haunting love theme associated with The Godfather.

The interior is marked Clover and PAT. 582938. Clover is known for its Japanese-made musical powder compacts of the mid-20th century, with documented examples bearing this same patent marking dating to the 1950s.

This example appears to have been gently used and carefully kept. There are scattered light surface scratches and a few very small dings consistent with age, but nothing that detracts significantly from its presentation. The mirror, powder compartment, original puff and sifter are all present, and the musical mechanism is working.
